ABC3D Marion Bataille Books

This is a beautifully stylish ABC book that captivated my husband and me as well as our 2 year old. I don't think I've ever come across as creative a pop up, one in which the letters do not necessarily simply pop but also shift and transform. We first picked this book up at a library and it was obviously new as all of the letters were intact unlike most library pop ups and what was more amazing was the respect our two year old gave this book. He did not once attempt to damage a letter which is impressive and certainly speaks highly of the book. I agree with a previous reviewer that this is a book for all ages. I can be enjoyed by kids learning their ABCs as well as adults with an appreciation of good design and whimsy.

ABC3D Marion Bataille Books Reviews

My 19 month old absolutely loves this book. He loves turning the pages (supervised!) and seeing the next letter pop up.
When I look it over, I keep thinking, "I didn't even know the ALPHABET did that (check out O-P-Q-R, for instance), much less that a single book could have so many different techniques in one volume." It really must be a huge effort to produce each one. To the more negative reviewers here I think you might be looking at the wrong things. This isn't an "alphabet book." It's a pop-up book that happens to use the letters of the alphabet as its "raw matter," and of _course_ there's more exciting material to use! But to keep the focus on the techniques themselves, it works. For current and future paper engineers, it's an inspiration. I do have to wonder what these folks were expecting the letters might do -- leap out and... I dunno, hand you some money? clean your house? perform acts I can't write about here? Well, I can't control how the book was marketed, but it seems to me that those who don't appreciate it may need to readjust their expectations a little. And no way is it for little kids; know your audience and that they'll take good care with it.

At the same time, I'm actually pleased to see that the trippy lenticular cover was apparently not part of the original design. On the flipside, how gross that it's this way for the American version -- I can just imagine selling the author on the idea "No, it's not tacky! With this cover, it'll fly off the shelves." Well, it's certainly possible that it's selling better here than the more sedate cover would have, but it's the least appealing part of the book for me.
I collect ABC books, but actually I consider this a statement piece on my coffee table. Everyone loves to pick it up and play with each page. Its clever pages are sort of mesmerizing. Not for little hands that may accidentally tear the delicate parts, but really fun to look at with older kids.
As a closet lover of typography, a nit-picker when looking through fonts and someone who enjoys the childhood thrill of a pop-up book, this creation sounded insanely amazing. It is! Beautifully crafted and constructed this "book" is fragile, intricate, whimsical clever and filled with thrilling little details. While its size will not fill the space usually reserved for books placed on coffee tables, that is where this book belongs. It demands to be seen and experienced and enjoyed. Gorgeous.
Daughter loves it but some of the letters don't work awesome(N & Z) but overall I love it. Also the fact of some letters like E&F they put on the same page where it starts out as an E and then turns into an F when you open the page. The idea of that sounds awesome but to see the E I can open the page only a little bit.
For being "just the alphabet", it's creative and well-designed, like a little masterpiece. As a designer, I think it's pretty great.
I actually came across this in a store a while back and bought it as a gift for my niece, who was too young for it at the time, so I kept it around until she was older. Well, she got older, and I still kept it and bought her another copy.
I recently bought this ABC pop-up for my 18 month old son, who knows, and is obsessed with, the alphabet. He adores this book, but I don't know if it is a blessing or a curse. On the first day I read it to him, I ended up reading it six times before he would lie down to take his nap. Once is never enough for this book. A couple of times a day I can expect to hear, "ABC pop-up, please." If he doesn't get it, there just might be a meltdown in the works. Furthermore, my kid is uncannily good at being very gentle with pop-ups, but I never let him handle them alone for fear they will get ruined. He hugs on this particular book like its one of his stuffed animals! I would not recommend this kind of book for a kid who likes to "play hard" with his or her books, especially given the cost. That being said, I do think this is a great book for any age, but certainly for very young children learning their alphabet. I also recommend 600 Black Spots and One Red Dot, both by David A. Carter.
