French in 32 Lessons The Gimmick series Adrienne 9780393045208 Books

I'm a middling, intermediate-type French student at this time, but have been studying (via Pimsleur) for a year, currently at Level 5. I was looking forward to this book, but already by Chapter 3 there are a couple of basic grammatical errors that even I can recognize, and I don't mean typos or misspellings, either. Unfortunately, I've lost confidence in this book, because God only knows what they'll tell me that I *won't* recognize as an error! Too bad. I like the setup and it looks like it would work well, providing grammar and drill, but it should have been edited by an experienced and literate French speaker to clear out these kinds of French 1 mistakes. At this time I'm afraid to take it further and am setting it aside.

French in 32 Lessons The Gimmick series Adrienne 9780393045208 Books Reviews

If you forget your high-school French, this book will remind you of the vocabulary you had and you will get comfortable making certain set types of sentences. But you will not get le plus-que-parfait du subjonctif from this book, and if you want to review for college, or in college, you ought to count on getting a more traditional book soon after hhis.

There is at least one misprint in the French, and some impolite expressions are mentioned along the way.
I studied hard with this book, 2-3 hours a day (with 2 years class work in middle school.) I think I put in about 100 hours before my trip to France. It's true if you do anything for 100 hours you will learn. This book worked for me as a visual learner, that is, I see the letters in my mind's eye before the sentence comes together. Listening to the sounds will help to cement the language but for me I have to SEE the letters because that is the way my brain works. For those of you who know you are visual learners, the Adrienne series is par excellence. I just purchased the Spanish series because my daughter is learning Spanish in Middle School now and I really really want to learn. The only way I can do this (in my opinion) is through this series, with a devoted amount of time per day to study. Write everything down. Use cue cards. Put down your smart phone. You WILL learn.
This book is indeed, like the name implies, split into 32 sections/lessons. But don't let that low number fool you, it covers a fair amount of important subjects in French that other books may miss and will help you a lot with grammar. However, I would like to point out that this is intended for beginners -- but not complete beginners. To understand this you will need to have a basic grasp of French. You will begin with easy lessons at first, and then move on to topics that are a bit more advanced. The lessons generally consist of a list of phrases with translations, questions that require translation (answers at back), and a review of related vocabulary. They are very effective when you participate and practice writing like recommended. I recommend this book for anyone trying to learn French. This in addition to a dual language dictionary, Cliffs Notes, and other materials. Now, you might note that I haven't given this book 5 stars, and the reason for that is because there are a few small mistakes in this book. As well it does not contain pronunciations, which some people may need.
Very good
I've studied many languages independently, and i can say the Adrienne series is the best for providing you with relevant words. I don't recommend it for actually learning a language, but it's a must-have supplement for any student of language.
