This story was an interesting blend of fact and fiction. Fictional characters and real persons were woven into the plot. It was obvious that the author had thoroughly researched the history of the railroads in the West.

Buck O'Conner recieved a letter from his last remaining family member. Sean was in danger of having his land taken from him by the railroad. Buck decides to help his only remaining kin. On his way to Fort Scott, Kansas, he runs into an ice storm. He begins to scan the area to take shelter when he suddenly sees a woman alone with a horse and buggy with a broken wheel. He tries to help her but she scratches and bites him and then pulls a gun on him. When he easily grabs her and disarms her, she promises to pay him "more" money. Buck thinks she's crazy but he finds an abandoned barn where they spend the night. After talking to her, he finds out she is a widow and a business woman and quite possibly the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her name is Amy Langford and she thinks someone is trying to kill her. She talks Buck into being her bodyguard.

The characters in this story are very well-developed. Both Buck and Amy have many secrets. Buck is very attracted to Amy, and Amy, despite knowing very little about Buck, feels safe with him. Buck is torn between the two factions causing all the trouble in the area. Amy is involved on the railroad side and Sean, Buck's kin, is on the disgruntled land owners side. Buck is determined to keep Amy safe and to help Sean. He loves Amy but is convinced she will never be able to accept his past.

This book is well worth the read. There is a lot of history, tension, and danger. I highly recommend this book. Buy the book. You won't be sorry.

Her Bodyguard Steam! Romance and Rails - R
Violence several attempts to physically harm someone, shootings
Language <175, including deity
Sex descriptive kissing.
I thought I had found a sexy, but not sex-filled book. WRONG. Seventy percent in (by then, I'm totally committed to the characters!) there is a way drawn-out and descriptive sex scene, and another about eighty-three percent in.
The heroine is brave and fierce, even though she's a little mistaken in some of her beliefs. I was rooting for her and the H, regardless of the big obstacles stacked against them. Bummer about all the sex. Returned for content.
Buck O'Connor is a rascally drifter unapologetically attracted to prairie princess Amy Langford. He enters the beginning of the book as a sort of knight in shining armor and never relinquishes the role. Their early flirtation is filled with humorous moments, where he proves he hides sharp intelligence behind his salacious quips and hot looks, while she impresses as a woman on a mission working successfully in a man's world. The book is told from dual points of view, but for some reason it seemed as though more emotion and layered substance came from Buck rather than Amy.

Amy is a rarity, a professional woman working for a speculative railroad fighting to expand across Indian Territory in 1870. She works for James Joy, who was the real-life owner of the short-lived Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad. Author E.E. Burke frames her fictitious characters around a number of actual historical people and events, including repercussions from Quantrill's raiders and the Massacre of Lawrence, Kansas. Real history woven into the fiber of a western romance is always a magnificent perk of being a fan of this genre, and Burke writes it very, very well. This book focuses on the gamble to build railroads across the plains and festering issues related to jayhawkers and raiders and the mix of sentiments related to abolitionism and slavery prevalent in Kansas and Missouri during and immediately after the Civil War. Our leads have been bloody victims of both sides, setting up tension throughout the story.

As one might predict, the light-hearted sentiments get left by the wayside as Buck finds that his employer, the delectable Mrs. Langford, really is in danger. She feels absolutely safe with him, and this easiness just bleeds off the page. There is a push and pull to establish a position of power in the relationship, but to me it felt organic. Buck would overstep and Amy would put him in his place. She would tend to have tunnel-vision in her business dealings and Buck would encourage her to broaden her outlook. I liked them as a couple, both in their lustful admiration of each other and as they came to know and rely on each other's strengths. They have a lot to overcome demons from their pasts, suitors, railroad timeline, position in society, and fear of intimacy.

A lot happens in this book, and the identity of Amy's assailant is a mystery through a large portion of the novel. The characters both grow and change. A few details tweaked my ultimate enjoyment, but I'm still gushing. On to download the next in the series....
I'm a big fan of combining history and real characters with fiction. This is my first E.E. Burke book and I found the author mixed the right amount of history with a romantic suspense story that kept my interest from beginning to end. Amy presents a woman in a man's world trying to make a difference in the world of big business and politics as Kansas and it's citizen recover from the tragedy of the Civil War, strong feelings of the people who suffered. Buck and Amy find themselves caught between the past and present as each learns more about the other. Buck's history, personal loss, and questionable past as a Missouri bushwhacker and Amy's loss of family in Lawrence, Kansas and husband during the Civil War fighting for the North put them on the opposite sides of a hatred that fueled cruel and brutal attacks on each side during the war. Add one steamy hero, and one self cocky heroine determined to make her dead father proud who find themselves highly attracted to each other and you set the scene for the story as Buck comes back to Kansas to help his cousin save his homestead from the greedy Railroad and politicians. Of course he doesn't realize the promoter Sean needs his help with is none other than the woman he saves during a winter storm and promises to protect from an unknown assassin trying to kill her. Can he help his cousin and still protect his Venus? Well, read this book and find out.
